Dr. Abtin Khosravi has completed more than 3,000 robotic procedures using the da Vinci Xi and SP systems, marking a milestone in his practice and within the robotic surgery program at St. Joseph Hospital.
He joined the hospital in 2017. Since then, robotic surgery has become a more consistent part of how many general surgery cases are approached. That shift has taken place over time, as both the technology and the teams supporting it have developed.
The broader program reflects that same progression. St. Joseph Hospital has performed more than 16,600 robotic soft tissue procedures using the da Vinci platform. That level of volume reflects a program that has grown steadily and built the structure needed to support robotic surgery on a regular basis.
Dr. Khosravi emphasizes that work at this level is not done individually.
“It’s a team effort,” he said. “I like to compare a robotic surgery team to a race car team. You may have the driver, in this case the surgeon, but success depends on the entire crew. That includes engineers, coordinators, OR staff, and specialists who all play a role.”
That approach is part of how robotic surgery is carried out day to day. Each procedure depends on preparation before surgery, coordination during the case, and follow-through afterward. Over time, that consistency becomes an important part of maintaining outcomes.
Robotic surgery itself has continued to evolve during this period. Systems such as the da Vinci Xi and SP have expanded how certain procedures can be performed, particularly in areas where precision and visualization are important. These changes support the work being done but do not replace the role of experience.
For patients, robotic-assisted procedures are often associated with smaller incisions and a more manageable recovery. The specifics vary depending on the procedure, but the goal remains consistent.
Reaching 3,000 cases reflects sustained experience over time within a structured program. It also reflects how a team adapts as both technology and expectations continue to change.
At Orange County Robotic General Surgery, that process continues with a focus on consistency, precision, and ongoing improvement.
